The Memory of the Rhineland is Lost…

… says Die Welt of March 4. It refers to the collapse of the Historical Archive of Cologne. I didn’t expect that anything about this sad occurence in which two lives were lost could make me laugh, but this stuff about “memory of the Rhineland” does. The Archive’s former department manager, Eberhard Illner, says he had warned the Archive’s administration after spotting fissures in the basement of the building last year. Apparently, the memory of the Rhineland isn’t really that important.

Even our museum of local history with its 50-year old pottery here in the North stands safer.

Maybe the Cologne natives went to their archive once a year after carnival, to regain their memory of who they were. Fortunately, there were several days left for that. Ash Wednesday (one day after Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday) was on February 28 this year, and the archive building collapsed only on March 3.
