No Drones from EADS – For Now, Anyway

Germany’s Federal Armed Forces in Afghanistan will probably use Heron 1, an unmanned aircraft (drone) equipped with cameras, infra-red- and radar sensors for improving its reconaissance. The supplier would be Israel Aerospace Industries.  The establishment of a German-Israeli maintenance and training company is also said to be planned. The contract will be modelled after one between Canada and Israel, worth some 100 million Dollars, also for use in Afghanistan. An expensive US drone (Predator) is apparently no longer considered, and EADS will not get 600 million Euros for a completely new development of a “progressive” drone. According to the ministry of defence, the amount is not available now.

Taide is very concerned. Imagine the reconaissance finds bin-Laden in a cave somewhere in Western Pakistan, or Mullah Omar in a guest house in Lahore. Imagine those sublime heros  killed after such an Israeli reconaissance flight. Intolerable!

A lot more intercultural sensitivity would be called for.
